Contact your local court. Many court houses now offer free “self-help” centers, where an on-staff attorney will provide assistance and limited legal advice (though they won’t show up in court for you). Most courts also maintain a listing of local low-income assistance centers which provide legal help (including actual representation) at low or no cost to those who can’t afford it. You may also want to try contacting the local Bar association to see if they have a lawyer referral service for pro bono (free) services.
