can a shool search your child before you or lawyer get there?

my sons school called and said online prescription drugs without a prescription they were going to search him and is book bag.i told them to wait till i got up there to search him or my lawyer. the vice princepal asked me when i could be there and i told her in 1 to 2 hours and so they went ahead and searched him because that was going to be to long for them. and now i found out that they to this to kids at school all the time . they dont even tell your parents that they are searching there kids.has my sons rights been violated?
