What percentage does an Attorney receive when he settles my suit?

In a (not my fault at all) car accident in Kentucky. How much of a percentage does an attorney normally collect? Is 35% of the gross if settled or 40% if suit is filed the norm? Plus court costs and other little things. It seems to turn out they purchase antibiotics online get 50% and I get to use mine to pay medical bills.
